I can smell gas, what should I do?

Natural gas by itself doesn’t have an odour, so an artificial odourant called Methanethiol is added to the gas (it smells a little like rotten cabbage). If you can smell gas on your premises, we recommend the following steps:

  1. Turn off your gas at your gas meter or LPG cylinder
  2. Extinguish naked flames such as cigarette lighters
  3. Call Plumbdog immediately to book a visit from one of our licensed gas fitters
  4. Do not light any naked flames, or operate electrical equipment
  5. Open all windows and doors for ventilation

If the gas smell is originating from the street, or from areas of your property beyond your gas meter, you should call your natural gas supply company to locate and fix the leak.
